IMovie Public Service Announcement (PSA) Project 2016

ACADEMIC/LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Scholars will be able to use IMOVIE to create a short (30-60 second) Movie Public Service Announcement.  Scholars will be able to select photos and video clips, choose music, and create a PSA about a topic that is important to them.  They will work with a partner to create the PSA.

Project:  Each Student will create a PSA using IMovie. You must be able to save your work, export your Movie, and upload it to your Google Drive.  You will then SHARE your file with me for credit.

This week you will be completing a Public Service Announcement in IMovie.

Grading is as follows:  



     The Public Service Announcement must use a minimum of 10 pictures or video clips



     PSA must be no less than 30 seconds in length and no more than 1:00 minute in length



     PSA must have smooth transitions between pictures



     PSA must use at least one piece of music.  If more, smooth transitions between sound bites



     PSA must have at least 6 facts about your topic

     

     PSA must be published (SHARE) as a movie file and viewable by Media Players



Following is the grading outline:

          60 points for neatness (smooth transitions)

          80 points for completeness  (All items present)

          20 points for within time limits

          40 points for partner review

Getting Started (from Center For DIGITAL Education Website)

1. Choose your topic. Pick a subject that is important to you, as well as one you can visualize. Keep your focus narrow and to the point. More than one idea confuses your audience, so have one main idea per PSA.
    


2. Time for some research - you need to know your stuff! Try to get the most current and up to date facts on your topic. Statistics and references can add to a PSA. You want to be convincing and accurate.
    


3. Consider your audience. Are you targeting parents, teens, teachers or some other social group? Consider your target audience's needs, preferences, as well as the things that might turn them off. They are the ones you want to rally to action. The action suggested by the PSA can be almost anything. It can be spelled out or implied in your PSA, just make sure that message is clear.
    


4. Grab your audience's attention. You might use visual effects, an emotional response, humor, or surprise to catch your target audience. Be careful, however, of using scare tactics. Attention getters are needed, but they must be carefully selected. For example, when filming a PSA about controlling anger, a glass-framed picture of a family can be shattered on camera. This was dramatic, but not melodramatic. Staging a scene between two angry people to convey the same idea is more difficult to do effectively.
    


5. Create a script and keep your script to a few simple statements. A 30-second PSA will typically require about 5 to 7 concise assertions. Highlight the major and minor points that you want to make. Be sure the information presented in the PSA is based on up-to-date, accurate research, findings and/or data.
    


6. Storyboard your script.
    


7. Film your footage and edit your PSA.
    


8. Find your audience and get their reaction. How do they respond and is it in the way you expected? Your goal is to call your audience to action. Are they inspired?

Introduction to IMOVIE

ACADEMIC/LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Scholars will be able to use IMOVIE to create a short (10-15 second) Movie Marquis (Logo).  Scholars will be given an introduction to IMovie today.  Before we start with IMovie, you will watch a short video about Movie Studio Logo’s.  Please complete the Google Classroom Assignment.

Project:  Each Student will create a Movie Marquis using IMovie. You must be able to save your work, export your Movie, and upload it to your Google Drive.  You will then SHARE your file with me for credit.

IMOVIE INTRODUCTION

You will be making a number of movies with Apple IMovie during this class.  Starting next week you will work on creating a Public Service Announcement (PSA) with a partner.  Start thinking of ideas now so you will be able to pick something for next week. 



Watch the following clip on your own to get ideas about your Personal Movie Marquis.  This is a short movie clip (10-15 seconds) that you will add to the end of your PSA to "sign" it.  The Movie Marquis you are creating should be a reflection of your personality, and is intended to let people know who created the movie it follows.  It can be used at the end or the beginning of a movie.  I want you to pretend you are creating a Movie Production Studio and give some thought to the kind of movies and messages you would like to support.  Be creative and have fun with this project.  It can be serious, funny or anything you want it to be.  Please make sure you use the clip you created in GarageBand for this project.  You may find pictures and other video clips online or sign out a camera.  I have a limited amount of equipment, so you will have to share.

Please create a Movie Marquis in IMovie.  It should be 10 to 15 seconds long and use audio, pictures/video, titles and effects.  You must create your music for this project with GarageBand.  You may not use commercially available music.  When you have edited the movie and created it, please use the SHARE function and EXPORT video to the desktop.  Upload that file to your Google Drive and share it with me for credit for the project.



STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS 



Step 1:  Download or Create Music with GarageBand (You must EXPORT your Music as an MP3 file and place it on the Desktop of your Computer.



Step 2:  Find and Download 1-3 Pictures or Images you are interested in using.  Place those Images on the Desktop of your Computer.



Step 3:  Open IMOVIE and using the FILE Menu (Top Left of Screen next to the word IMovie) click on NEW PROJECT



Step 4:  Name your Project "(Your Last Name) Marquis P (2,3,4,8,9) A/B"



Step 5:  Drag your Music File into the WorkSpace (Upper Left Area of your IMovie Program Screen), it should create a Green Box.  Click the little white button with a settings wheel to adjust the clip or trim it down.



Step 6:  Drag your Image File(s) into the Green Music Box within the WorkSpace.  Use the upper left hand Black Box (Crop Symbol) to adjust the way each picture is viewed during the.  Use the lower Blue Box with a settings wheel to adjust the length of the picture in the movie and add effects to the picture(s).



Step 7:  Click the Preview Arrows (Left Lower Middle of the screen below the WorkSpace) to see what your finished Movie will look like at any step of this process.



Step 8:  Click the small "T" button under the Preview Screen to add Titles to your work.  You can add them before images, on images or at the end.  Make sure you complete the TEXT sections prior to clicking DONE!



Step 9:  Click the small "Box" to the right of the "T" button to add Transitions between images and Titles.



Step 10:  Use any additional functions you might know about in IMovie.  Above steps are just the basics.  This is your Project!  Make it UNIQUE!



Step 11:  Click the SHARE Menu and Select EXPORT MOVIE.  Make sure you EXPORT your movie to the Desktop so you can find the finished file.



Step: 12:  Open Your Google DRIVE and find the UPLOAD Button.  Click it and Find the Movie FILE you just created.  UPLOAD your Movie to your Google Drive.  Once it has finished uploading, Click the SHARE Button and add my Email Address for credit.  You must also Click the GET SHAREABLE LINK Button in the Upper Right Hand Corner of the SHARE Box.  Highlight the Link Created and use the COMMAND-C to Copy it!    



Grading Rubric:

Gamestar Mechanic 2016

ACADEMIC/LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Scholars
use a link provided on the class website to begin learning about how
video games are created.  Each scholar will work on their own to work
through the storyline and levels of the game-making process.  Scholars
will be required to use Peer Mentoring to help each other through
difficult levels prior to instructor intervention.

GarageBand - Day II

Everyone:



If you completed a song using GarageBand during the last class, please verify that you have EXPORTED your MP3 and UPLOADED it to your Google Drive Account.  You cannot recieve credit until you SHARE your song with hscribner@ucvare.org.  Directions are below if you are having trouble.  When you have finished the project, use the GRADING RUBRIC below to figure out your score on this project.  Additional learning should include working on the QUESTION (Constructed Response) on your Google Classroom, completing the Music Lyric Project listed below, or use SOUNDATION.COM (Link Below) to create another unique song and EXPORT it as a .wav file for use later.  Soundation.com has some different loops and is a free, online version similar to GarageBand!  Have Fun With This Project!

SOUNDATION ONLINE AUDIO CREATOR - FREE (CLICK HERE)

Today we will continue looking at GarageBand!  I will show you how to
open the application and navigate around for the first few minutes of
the class.  You will then have the remainder of class to create a new
song for yourself.  You will be using part of this song for your IMovie Marquise Project.  Make sure you figure out how to start a project,
work with loops, save a project, and export it to your desktop.  Refer to any of the videos and help items in
yesterday's post!



Now that you have a basic idea how to navigate around the GarageBand
application, please create a music track at least 25 seconds long for
use in an IMovie project coming up.  You need to use at least three
different loops to create the song.  I would suggest Percussion, Bass,
and any other loop of your choice.  It can be slow or fast and have any
theme you like.  Try to create it to reflect your personality or have a
mood of some kind.  It can be scary, funny, happy, sad, melodramatic,
suspenseful, or just plain.  When you are finished creating the music
track you must SHARE it by EXPORTing it to DISK.  Place it on your
desktop as an MP3 file.  Now you are ready to open your GDrive and
UPLOAD the file online.  Once you have finished the UPLOAD, please SHARE
the MP3 file with me by hitting the SHARE button and entering my email
address.  You should also COPY the web address (Top Of The Share Box)
and change the Permission for this file to ANYONE WITH LINK.  You can
now put a link to this file on your Tackk.com Website by adding a word
or picture and applying a link.  I will show everyone how to do this in
class.



Follow these steps in class to complete this assignment:

1. Open GarageBand


2. Click NEW PROJECT


3. Open LOOPS Project


4. Create Music with at least 3 loops (minimum)


5. Save Project to Desktop (Create a File on desktop for your stuff)


6. Click SHARE above project and select EXPORT TO DISK


7. EXPORT an MP3 Version of your music to Desktop


8. Open Web Browser (Firefox)


9. Sign In To GDRIVE


10. Click the red NEW box in upper left area of the screen


11. Choose UPLOAD FILE


12. Pick the file you placed on the desktop of your computer


13. Upload your MP3 to your GDrive


14. Click the new file listed in your GDrive


15. Click the SHARE button (little person with "+" or SHARE from Menu.


16. Change WHO HAS ACCESS to Anyone With Link


17. Add hscribner@ucvare.org to SHARE email list on bottom.


18. COMPLETE STEPS 19-27 FOR ADDITIONAL CREDIT!

Welcome To GarageBand!

If you did not bring headphones today, you cannot complete today's assignment.  You must work on the MUSIC LYRICS Assignment at the bottom of this post!

Please follow the directions below to begin creating
music with GarageBand.  If you have already used this program, it is
your obligation in class to help others.  YOU MAY ONLY USE GARAGEBAND. 
YOU MAY NOT LISTEN TO MP3's OR OTHER COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE MUSIC.  Today is your day to familiarize
yourself with how the program works, and how to navigate around the
different toolboxes.  Save anything that you want to keep by uploading
files to your Google Drive.  Because other students use these computers,
there is no guarantee that your work will be here tomorrow.

GARAGEBAND INTRODUCTION:

Open Apple's GarageBand Application.  First, here is the Apple GarageBand 11 Tutorial Video (Click Here) Here is a longer tutorial from YouTube (Click Here).  You can also use this site for a document on how to get started from APPLE (Click Here).  Once you have watched the video, use the headphones to listen
to GarageBand while you create a personal track.  Try to create a track
that is 20-25 seconds and includes any of the instruments listed in the
Loop Browser.  You will be using the final cut of this track you are
creating as the background for the Marquise Project in IMovie later in the Marking Period.  Make sure it sounds like you want it too.  When you are done
look under the SHARE section to Export Song To Disk and save it.  You
might want to Upload it to your GDrive so you do not lose it.

Khan Academy - Big History 2016

Today
scholars will create an account on Khan Academy so they can work from home, invite other teachers to help coach them, and generally allow them to learn about many different classes on their own.  This is an introduction to Blended Learning, and starting them on the path to become life-long learners.  They can access many different classes and RTI Math and ELA programs.  There is also content available in the arts, science, social studies, and many other topics.  Scholars will be able to log in and work on various programs independently.
